“As a Vietnam veteran, I know firsthand of the personal sacrifice, camaraderie and dedication to purpose that veterans share. I am proud to be counted in their ranks,” said Slocum who spearheaded the creation of the commission. “With veterans representing all ages and branches of the Armed Services, the Veterans Commission will examine the needs, set the priorities, and help the County do its part to take care of those who have taken care of us.”. The commission will work with the Human Services Agency’s County Veterans Services Office that helps veterans with claims and referrals, manages the newly launched ID project, which gives veterans easy-to-carry proof of service and provides community outreach. (To make an appointment with the County Veterans Services Office, call 650-802-6598 or email veteransservices-smc@smcgov.org.).

Molissa Fenley’s “Redwood Park” shifted attention toward the region’s diffuse Asian aspect, with Jeanrenaud’s Eastern-inflected composition for wooden percussion, drums and cymbal, played with dazzling precision by Anna Wray and Nava Dunkelman, with Fenley’s repeated use of extended martial-style lunges and upright stances echoing verticality of the redwoods. Originally designed for five men (Emily Kerr replaced an injured dancer), the work took inspiration from Fenley’s long walks through the park, depicted by circuitous, switchback floor patterns and a sense of a landscape, both continuous and ever-changing.
