That’s precisely what the adventurous Aurora Theatre Company has tried to do with this old Russian folk tale about a hapless soldier who trades his fiddle for a magical book, Former San Francisco Ballet star Muriel Maffre and Aurora artistic director Tom Ross mash up dance, puppetry and music in an intriguing 80-minute reverie that has great promise but lacks cohesion, All ballet shoes like tieks of the elements are there but they don’t quite coalesce in this uneven fable, Although it’s shot through with lovely moments, this fanciful puppet parable about time, temptation and regret never quite pulls the heartstrings..
Founded some three decades ago by Wynton Marsalis, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) seems to reveal new depth with each California trip. Under the direction of the Pulitzer Prize-winning trumpet star, the talent-laden (but still all-male) group pursues many different creative missions at an exceptionally high level. Over the coming days, the 15-piece ensemble plays various dates around the region, starting with Friday’s headlining set at the Monterey Jazz Festival. The show centers on the orchestra’s collaboration with innovative Memphis dancer Charles “Lil Buck” Riley (whose jookin moves went viral in a cell phone video shot by director Spike Jonze) and tap and hip-hop dance master Jared Grimes, a major force on Broadway. Lil Buck and Grimes also join the JLCO at UC Davis’ Jackson Hall on Sept. 22 and Stanford’s Bing Concert Hall on Sept. 26 for the West Coast premiere of Marsalis’ “Spaces,” an evening-length, 10-movement suite in which each piece evokes a different animal and the environment it inhabits.

“One measure that had very little to do with it they fell short on,” Liccardo said, adding that was largely because of circumstances outside the group’s control, such as the unexpected cancellations of the ballet and symphony groups as well as delays in the renovation of the San Jose Civic. “Now we have a situation where Team San Jose clearly performed above expectations and we want to make sure people are properly rewarded.”. The council also voted 10-1, with Councilman Pierluigi Oliverio opposed, to accept the latest annual audit, and change Team San Jose’s upcoming management agreement so that performance measures and incentive fees would be awarded for the group’s overall score, not tied to individual categories.
