The Monte Sereno/La Hacienda Inn saga continued, as the city council voted unanimously to certify an EIR that gauged the impact housing would have on the property. Residents, the city and La Hacienda’s owner remained at odds over how much housing could be built there, but the city this year approved three units per acre on the 4.45-acre property. In the meantime, La Hacienda owner Russ Stanley opened a bar on site in early December. The Los Gatos Union School District received $3.3 million from the state–money that was forfeited by the town when Gov. Jerry Brown seized control of redevelopment agency funds. The Los Gatos-Saratoga Union High School District received $2.2 million in RDA funds.

The Flex comes in both a six- and a seven-seat version. My all-wheel-drive SEL test car was the seven-seat version, which I’ll try to sway you away from. If the Flex’s bold styling just isn’t for your family, you may also want to consider the slightly more conventional-looking Chevy Traverse and Mazda CX-9. EXTERIORThe Flex alternately looks like a retro woodless woodie and something I could imagine bouncing down the strip on hydraulics to a thumping beat that you feel more than hear. While I love the Flex’s unmistakably boxy exterior, I just can’t decide if its looks echo my own personality. Maybe I just need to layer on some more bling and crank the bass a little louder.

The appropriately named program, “Masterworks of Movement and Theatre,” continues at 8 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts. Petit’s “Carmen” thrives on the energy of Parisian cabaret dancing, including some of its sardonic wit. The choreography is propulsive, stylized and not profound. Yet theatrically “Carmen” throws powerful punches. The chair dance turns into a revolving door for lovers; the bandits’ stomping and beating the floor to mock Don Jose and egg on Carmen recall brutal tribal rituals. San Jose’s dancers performed all of it with spitfire energy and just the right note of cynicism.
