Gass creates art about land use and water issues in California and the American West. She is best known for her textile-based works in luscious colors and evocative textures that she calls “stitched paintings.” Gass uses fabric, dyes, wax-resist, embroidery and quilting techniques to construct multi-layered, birds-eye-view landscapes that map the effect of humans on our water resources. Her four-work series, “Cooley Landing: Impact of Climate Change and Sea Level Rise,” presents aerial views of East Palo Alto Baylands that show the area in 2015, then with 1-foot, 3-foot and 5-foot sea-level rises. The compelling quality of her work draws viewers in to deliver a serious message.
